Mafalda Across Languages: The Secrets of Good Translation

Faculty of Arts, Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, Trieda Andreja Hlinku 1, room P9

What happens to a comic when it moves from one language to another? Join us for a workshop on Mafalda and the application of Anton Popovič’s communication model (1983) to comics translation.

Through practical examples, participants will try their hand at translation and explore how meaning, context, cultural specificities and pragmatic aspects shape translation choices. Intended for a specialist audience, the workshop is organised by prof. Mgr. Edita Horňáčková Klapicová, PhD., and Mgr. Karin Kopasová from the Department of Romance and Germanic Studies at the Faculty of Arts in Nitra.

The event is an output of project APVV-23-0586. Its practical application of Popovič’s model contributes to reflection on the Slovak translation studies tradition and its use in text analysis and translation.

Translating religious concepts in Dante’s Divine Comedy: a lecture by Jacob Blakesley

On 28 September 2026 at 9:15 a.m., Professor Jacob Blakesley (Sapienza University of Rome) will give a lecture entitled Translating Religious Concepts Across the World: Dante’s Divine Comedy in room P9.

The lecture’s comparative focus on the translation of religious concepts in European and non-European cultural contexts connects with the project’s translation studies and intercultural perspectives. The history of Divine Comedy translations in mainland China and Taiwan, examined in the speaker’s research, provides a concrete example of the poem’s reception beyond Europe.

The lecture extends reflection on the European literary tradition by considering how that tradition is received through translation in different cultural settings.
